Am I really hungry?

Are you interested in mindful eating to change your eating habits long term?

Mindful eating means eating with attention and intention – attention is necessary to notice, taste and enjoy food and the intention of eating is to care and look after yourself. Eating is natural, healthy and pleasurable but in today’s world eating has become very often a mindless and guilt-laden activity instead.

So what is mindful eating all about?

  • Enjoying and tasting every mouthful without distraction and being present in the moment
  • Being aware of physical and emotional triggers
  • Learning to meet some of your other needs in more beneficial ways than eating
  • Learning to choose food for enjoyment and nourishment

How does mindful eating help with eating issues?

Most people who struggle with food are unaware of their underlying triggers, thoughts, and feelings. Mindfulness increases our awareness of these old patterns without judgment and creates a space between our triggers and our actions. This space is a possibility – a change to act differently and make healthier choices that are more in line with the person you want to be and the life you want to create for yourself.

So next time you notice a craving or an urge to eat even though you are not really hungry, ask yourself the following questions:

Why?

Why do I eat? Am I hungry, bored, frustrated…?

When?

When do I feel like eating? When do I decide to eat?

What?

What kind of food do I choose?

How?

How do I eat?

How Much?

How much do I eat?

Where?

Where does the food I’ve consumed go?
